Schools out forever

I've realized that you don't have to be in school to get an education. You can educate yourself without being in school. You can read books, do independant studies, etc.

Depending on how this summer goes, I may take a semester off from school. My reasons being this...
My belief is that every man reaps what he sows. The work you put into your education is what you will get out of it. Right now, I don't have any real idea of what I want to get out of college. I did recently settle on philosophy as my major, but other than that it is pretty ambigous. For me to continue, I need to figure out my own goals for what I want. Staying in college without any goals doesn't do anything. I can be enrolled and taking classes, but if i don't know what I want to get out of it, and don't put forth a lot of effort, then i'm wasting my time and my parents money.

The reason I would take a semester off would be so that my time in school would no longer be wasted, but that I would be making the most of it. I would take time to read in different areas and start settling on my own goals, figuring out what is important to me, then put all of my work into that.

Now, none of this is final. This is just an idea that I have been toying with. Hopefully, I will figure things out this summer. But if I don't feel that I am ready then I will wait.

I also believe college and school is definently a great means to get educated, but not the only means. I place a high value on college, but I will no longer but half-hearted effort into something I have no idea what I want out of.

I also want to note that I have been very very fortunate indeed that my parents have funded me thus far in school. Without their support I would not be where I am, and I would not now be finding this opportunity to do this. College has been immensely helpful in so many ways. From learning social skills and the wonderful friends that I have around me, to what God has been taking me through. I'm so glad that i've gotten to come here. I just want to make the most of it so 10-20 years later down the road I won't regret not making the most of my college experience.

So on that end, my summer plans are to read A LOT so if any of you have any recommendations I would love to hear from you.

Hi Sean. Found your blog through MWRice's.

I recommend Vonnegut's stuff, especially Slaughterhouse Five and God Bless You, Mr. Rosewater. I also like Tim O'Brien's Vietnam stuff (The Things They Carried and If I Die In A Combat Zone) and his fiction (Tomcat In Love and In the Lake Of the Woods).

Read A New Kind of Christian by Brian McLaren. In my top 5 of books. well worth the time.
